This museum is beautiful! The entire place is a large Roman style structure that resembles an insane mansion. Set on a cliff in Malibu it is tucked away and would be missed while driving by. Tickets are free but need to be printed out and brought with you.
Walking up makes you wonder if you are in the right place. Columns and statues greet you. There is also a mini stadium near the front. Upon entering, there is a small fountain and you can go into one of the many rooms holding busts and ancient artwork. The building was modeled after Villa dei Papiri a villa destroyed during Mount Vesuvius's eruption in 79 A.D. So that's cool! Currently there is a mosaic exhibit which was incredible. The center houses a courtyard with statues and fountains. A play was performed while I was there. It was silly and geared towards kids but they threw in adult jokes to entertain a wider audience. It was really funny and enjoyable. The group was from the Troubadour Theater Company. The whole skit was about a sheep sacrifice to Mercury.
My favorite part of the museum is the outside portion. The grounds are just so well kept and are lined with shrubs. Benches line the corners of the garden. This would be a great place to bring a book and read or eat a picnic. I bet it looks even more beautiful during flower blooming season. Engagement photos should be taken here. So men get ready.
