I am not sure about you but I find pilates a bit boring. I do not feel like I am getting an amazing workout. I usually tell people if you don't get a good workout you are not working hard enough because you can make every class harder so I wondered if it was just the studios I have tried. My roommate recommend I try SLT (formally called Brooklyn Body Burn). They have their own kind of pilates. I am not sure you can even call that because they have built their own machines and its more strength training and cardio than regular pilates.
There are several studios in NYC. I tried the Midtown location (41 W 57th St 8Fl). It was very clean and only has about 12 machines in the studio. Very small with only a reception desk to the left of the picture above. Just like normal pilates you go barefoot or with grippy socks. The teacher I had was Christina Ramos. Let me tell you, she was intense. She kept correcting my form which is awesome since it was my first time. However, I felt it was a tad strict. Of course I would never take it personally because it is their job to motivate and correct. I kept thinking go to someone else I'm just trying to stay up over here. Haha no it was fine but yes, very difficult.
The class uses almost everything in the picture above (not the pole pictured on the right side). For 50 minutes you are given no break in this class, meaning every move is challenging. No poses are relaxing. You are encouraged to take a break if you need one. Weight is added to every move. The hardest for me were the planks while trying to push off with your feet or the table pose with one leg pushing off the handles. Let's just say I am still sore two days after. This class is a great way to get a hard workout. I have not decided if I am going to go again. Your first class is $20 but after that it is $40, which is a bit insane but it could be worth it. Try it and let me know what you think!
