Let me start by saying I am not a fan of yoga. Never have and never will enjoy yoga more than other workouts. However, since I am staying with my aunt in Laguna Niguel and she wanted to take yoga I agreed. She said that the class is Restorative she said it piqued my interest. The studio is called You and the Mat.
The building is in a cute shopping mall across from Whole Foods (post workout smoothie or no?). Upon walking in you run into a desk and a polite woman who checks you in. The entryway also consisted of a few racks of clothing and paintings decorating the walls. Feels like a cute boutique. There are only two studios; one larger, and the other smaller both with sheer curtains covering the windows. It almost felt like a weird art gallery. I was into it. Our class was in the smaller room. I went in and placed my mat on the back wall.
The instructor, Sunny, comes into class and has us grab two blankets, a strap, and 2 blocks. Already I knew this was not going to be like any yoga I have ever done before. We went from alternating the blanket as back, head, and arm support. Our child's pose was upgraded with a blanket under the feet and legs. We also had a pillow under our faces. This is a pose I could get used to! We also used a strap to hold a block between our leg, as well as wrapped around the arch of the foot and pulled taught. The instructor's voice was so soothing and he walked around correcting posture without disrupting meditation. He also gave alternatives to poses to enhance your stretch. The music alternated between rainsticks and light drumming. Basically, I became so relaxed that I have no idea where I went. My brain stopped going and I just laid there in silence. I have never felt so relaxed. At the end of class Sunny says:
Watch your thoughts, they become words. Watch your words, they become actions. Watch your actions, they become habits. Watch your habits, they become your character. Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.
In all I would never have chosen this class on my own but at this time there was nothing I needed more. I do 90% high intensity workouts and this class made me realize I need to relax as well. I enjoyed this studio and I enjoyed Sunny as an instructor. I will be back for another late night class!
